Eagle soars to second
Frome Running Club headed off-road last weekend to take place in a variety of multi-terrain events.
Ten Frome runners took part in the Westbury 10k, where muddy fields in both the first and last kilometre proved to be an added challenge for all of the competitors.
They didn't hold back Gary Eagle (MV50), pictured, who came second in 37mins 53secs – just six seconds behind the winner.
Following close behind in 41:05 was Dave Williams (MV50), while Judy Bryant (FV45) registered a new personal best of 54:12.

Nina Casey (SF) completed her 10k debut in a very creditable time of 60:05 and other Frome finishers were Nick Cooper (MV40) in 44:45, Robin-Mark Schols (MV50) in 45:30, Marcus Gaffney (MV40) in 46:07, Carolyn Nicholls (SF) in 53:07, Judy Bryant (FV45) in 54:12, Anne Porter (FV50) in 54:31 and Paul Gardner (FV50) in 55:16.
At the Mendip Muddle, a 20k race held amidst the spectacular scenery of the Mendip Hills, five hardy runners did battle with mud, rain, wind and hills.
Recent heavy rainfall made conditions underfoot particularly difficult for those who took part but Jim Plunkett-Cole (MV40) was able to cross the line in 1hr 40:15, followed by Steve Frankl (MS) in 1:46:04.
Mark Aston (MV60) set a new personal best of 2:36:54 and Karen Evans (FV45) clocked 2:44:23, while Debbie Roberts (FV45) came home in 2:44:40.
For Frome runner Ian Holmes, the weekend offered an unusual opportunity to 'Race the Train'. This Cotswolds- based race covered a distance of 14 miles, taking a circular route that started at Cheltenham Race Course and went over popular local landmark Cleeve Hill into the picturesque village of Winchcombe.
Competitors raced against the Gloucestershire and Warwickshire Steam Train and Holmes was pleased to make it back to the start around a minute before the train.
Lee Stone flew the flag for Frome in this year's Cardiff Half Marathon, registering a new personal best by completing the popular course in 1:34:51.
Further afield, Keith Robinson tackled the flat and fast Toronto Waterfront Marathon in Canada, completing the course in 3:06:53.
