DOZENS of volunteers braved bad weather to clean up Berrow's dunes for an annual conservation day.

The Sedgemoor Conservation Volunteers, pictured above, undertook sea buckthorn scrub clearance on Sunday and wanted as many people as possible to get involved.

Sedgemoor District Council landscape officer Janette Burton said: "The weather was bad but thanks to all those who braved it to carry out the vital work.

"The buckthorn, introduced less than a century ago, needed clearing as it spread to more than half of the reserve, causing the loss of much species-rich grassland.

"It's very invasive and by removing it we hope to re-establish more species in the area. The marram planting will help to stabilise the area and make it flourish."

Berrow Dunes supports some of the most diverse flora in Somerset, with at least 270 species of flowering plant recorded.
