Britain's high streets were famous once, way back, and as recently as 2007 retail shops were doing OK with larger franchises wiping out little independents.

But strength was deceptive, vulnerable to changing technology and nimbler competitors, undermined by corrupt bankers and food labelling scandals, the public lost patience and failed to bring cheer to Christmas tills.

The demise of the high street is similar to Britain's political class, which was among the first to develop modern democracy yet ceased to be important long before Edward Heath took us into Europe.

Frome's political class is blind to the risks, didn't see austerity coming, the dangers of nepotism, MPs' expenses scandals, and has no alternative such as a unitary authority, which potentially reduces an unnecessary number of politicians in the current three-tier system: Frome, Mendip and Somerset councils.

I listen to local market traders and businessmen who believe politics should be taken out of local government because councillors have ceased to represent political rivals once they are elected.

As a result, I am now an elected councillor without the party whip on Mendip District Council and represent all the people in my ward fairly and transparently, whatever their political colour.

The people of Mendip now have a councillor who can put a case for change without the political baggage that has gone before.

Adrian Dobinson

Frome Town and Mendip district councillor for Berkley Down
