Driving force behind festival becomes its new president
The man who first dreamt of creating a festival to showcase Frome's artistic talents and then made it a reality has accepted the honorary role of festival president.
The Frome Festival, now in its 12th year, was originated by Martin Bax and a team of volunteers to celebrate the town's thriving arts community and bring established performers to venues such as the Merlin Theatre, Memorial Theatre and Rook Lane Arts. The festival also embraces the visual arts and includes exhibitions by world-renowned artists.
Formerly an actor with the National Theatre, Mr Bax was able to draw upon former colleagues such as Stephanie Cole and Timothy West, to help bring a quality and status to the festival which enabled the 10-day event to flourish and rapidly rise to one of the most highly regarded community festivals in the country.
Mr Bax, whose efforts were rewarded with an MBE, retired from the post of director after seven years. He replaces Angela Yeoman as president following her recent retirement from the post.
Festival chairman Dr Bob Morris said: "Angela Yeoman was our first president. She has been a great supporter of the festival right from the start in 2001, but we understand why, after 11 years, she has decided to stand down. She goes with our very appreciative thanks.
"In inviting Martin Bax to step up from being vice-president, the trustees are keen to honour our commitment to keeping this unique community festival flourishing.
"Martin founded Frome Festival and directed the first seven annual programmes with flair and energy. We are delighted to welcome him as president."
Mr Bax said: "I felt very honoured to be offered the post of president of the Frome Festival and was delighted to accept. I hope to carry on the high level of support and encouragement that Angela Yeoman gave to the organisation as the first president."
This year's festival, under the direction of Martin Dimery, promises to be as exciting as ever and runs from Friday, July 6, to Sunday, July 15. Programme details will be announced in the coming weeks.
