Exeter University E 2 Shepton Mallet Men 2

Table-topping Shepton Mallet failed to pick up maximum points in Central 1 for the first time since November when they were held to a draw at in-form Exeter University.

The home side started the brighter and made use of the width to attack the Shepton back-line, taking the lead when a bouncing ball was volleyed in at close range past goalkeeper Tom Ward.

The second half saw a change in positions and Shepton began to look the more dominant side. Midfield duo Chris Reina and Phil White controlled the game and regularly found the visiting forwards.

The pressure paid off when Lawrence Heywood was fouled and the subsequent penalty flick was coolly dispatched by Si Lord.

Four yellow cards were then shared between the teams, with Brett Orrell and James Fry given five minutes in the sin-bin for Shepton.

With extra space on the pitch, Shepton exposed a number of holes in the hosts' defence, which created several short corners. Again Lord stepped up and got his second to give the visitors the lead.

Exeter were not to be denied, though, and with ten minutes to go, Joe Corp conceded a penalty flick after a poor challenge. Ward pulled off a superb initial save but, as time ticked on, the hosts were able to snatch a share of the spoils.

Shepton Mallet host Westbury UB at Shepton Leisure Centre on Saturday (1pm) before they continue their England Vase campaign at Basingstoke on Sunday.

Phillips Tyres man of the match: Tom Ward.
