Priddy husky racer Martin Owen picked up a double prize at the Siberian Husky Club of Great Britain's Aviemore sleddog race earlier this month – the biggest of its kind in the UK.

Held at the foot of the Cairngorm Mountains in the Scottish Highlands, the 30th anniversary event saw 190 teams and more than 1,000 dogs in action.

Competing over a four-mile snow trail, several classes were contested and Owen – whose wife Debbie also took part – triumphed in the four and three-dog events.

In the four-dog category with huskies Trinity, Magic, Hex and Woody, Owen set a new course record of 13mins 15secs – the fastest time of the whole competition, even beating the larger six and eight-dog teams. His nearest rival was 1:33 behind.

Alongside Shifty, Kola and Glider, Owen also triumphed by 52secs in the three-dog class against 46 other entries – the largest field on the day.

"This is unbelievable considering that last March we were told that Shifty would probably never run again after suffering a serious leg injury in the kennels at home," said Owen.

"But thanks to an amazing orthopedic vet, Mike Guilliard, Shifty not only ran again but led the team home to an impressive victory."

Martin and Debbie would like to thank everybody that helped them during the event, their friends and family for continued support, Quest dogfood, Guilliard and the event organisers.
