HOMELESS charity Comfort and Warmth is making an urgent plea for volunteers and donations to assist with the running of a Christmas shelter in Weston-super-Mare.

The charity has been providing food and accommodation for homeless people in the resort for the past 23 years over the festive period.

Volunteers work together to set up the Comfort At Christmas shelter at St Paul's Church in Walliscote Road to ensure those less fortunate are kept warm and fed over Christmas.

Organisers say for the first year ever plenty of volunteers have come forward to help run the shelter but they would welcome more and are also in desperate need of donations.

The charity urgently needs food, blankets, clothing, toiletries and gifts to offer to the people staying at the shelter from Christmas Eve until Friday December 28.

Committee chairman Jon Codd said:  "Comfort At Christmas is such a worthy cause and is very close to my heart.

"We are operating for the 23rd year running and this is the first year that we have had plenty of volunteers come forward to help staff the shelter over the five days, which is great news.

"However, we do need more helpers for the evening shifts (6pm-11pm) and nights 11pm-8am, as well as donations of food, clothing, non-perishable food, blankets and soaps to hand out to clients staying at the shelter.

"We would also welcome donations of money if possible to help with our running costs, no matter how small."
