An irresponsible pet owner is in the doghouse for allowing their animal to perpetually poo the pavements of Oakhill.

The problem is so bad that it is forcing parents and their children to walk in the busy A361 road rather than pick their way through the dog mess on the pavements to and from Oakhill School.

One angry mum, who did not want to be named, said this week: "It's been a problem in the village for a while and there was a plea in the parish newsletter before the summer holidays for dog owners to be more responsible.

"But since the new term started it is even worse than ever. To avoid the dog mess we have to walk in the road which is very busy with traffic and extremely dangerous."

Parents believe an early morning dog walker's pet is responsible. Children are treading the mess into their homes and also into school – where new carpets have just been laid.

Parents have reported the problems to Mendip District Council.

A spokesman for the council said the dog warden was investigating the complaints and anyone found allowing their dog to foul a public place faces a penalty notice of £75.

And Wayne Closier, Mendip district councillor for the village, said this week: "We can reassure the residents that the dog warden has been alerted and is on the case, and hopefully this problem will be sorted out very quickly."
