Prosecutor Julyan Stephens said the offences arose after the defendant was alleged to have made a racist remark towards the victim and also punched him several times.
Clarke pleaded not guilty to both charges and following a review of the case the matter was adjourned for a trial to take place on November 26.
Until his next court appearance he was released on unconditional bail.
