Diamond wedding delight for Shepton sweethearts Arthur and Violet Uphill
SHEPTON sweethearts Arthur and Violet Uphill have celebrated their diamond anniversary with close family and friends.
The happy couple, who have lived in Shepton all their lives, met in their early 20s while working in the local Clarks factory.
Violet (nee Higgins) said: "We were introduced by a friend.
"We got married in Shepton Mallet Church on October 3. It was during the Harvest Festival and they were repairing the church and there was scaffolding up."
Arthur did national service from 1945 until 1948 in the Royal Engineers and served in Malaya and Singapore. He then went to Clarks where he worked for 38 years as a machinist.
Violet worked at Norah Fry for 20 years.
