Devastation as lorry crashes into historic Radstock shop
Shops in Radstock have been almost destroyed after a lorry crashed into an opticians in the early hours of Wednesday.
A truck towing another heavy goods vehicle smashed into the historic building at 03.17am. The vehicle came to rest on the pavement on Wells Road. Emergency services rushed to the scene to find the driver, a man in his forties, trapped in the cab of the lorry who was freed by firefighters.
Building surveyors from Bath and North East Somerset Council visited the scene to have a look at Lovat Short Optometrists and Hair Razor on The Street.
The building is owned by John Lovat Short and dates from 1907. It was originally a jeweller's, F S Lane.

“I went by at about 3.30am and it was a huge bright blue and yellow recovery lorry towing a hgv. The road previous is a easy curve to the left coming down the hill. Looked to me (remember I'm no lorry expert!) like he just couldn't stop with that much weight on the back as there were broken skid marks all down the road. So glad it wasn't 12 hours later/earlier with pedestrians on the crossing etc.”

“Who was the recovery operator ? With 18 + years in the heavy recovery industry a former member of avro & the institute of vehicle recovery I would say the recovery vehicle was grossly overloaded on the rear axle . I have recovered vehicles over 44ton all over the country & have always been within the law . Anybody know if vosa was involved ? I think the industry has had in-experienced operators doing profesional jobs at less than half the price for to long . It takes an accident like this for actions to be taken. @ 03.17 luckly there was not another motorist involved. It looks good towing heavy commercials But stopping them on a six pence you need to know what you are doing . Hope the driver is ok.”
