Cute Westies just perfect on porcelain
First Frost – Westies
When looking through my portfolio for last week's snow scene, which was filed under Winter paintings, I came across this portrait of two young Westies, slightly bemused by their first encounter with a frosty landscape. This painting is from the early eighties when porcelain collectors' plates were all the rage. At the time I did many series of these, mostly wildlife, but now and again I was asked to paint dog pictures. West Highland White Terriers were always the most requested dogs by the plate manufacturers and indeed topped the polls as Britain's most popular dog at the time.

I am not sure as to whether this is still the case but there does seem to be plenty around and rightly so as they are delightful little dogs. Most of my paintings were commissioned by Danbury Mint with my Westie portraits ending up on plates, mugs, thimbles and even a set of porcelain bells for the American market.
