Winscombe U15s 29

Weston Hornets U15s 6

Winscombe entertained Hornets in the semi-final of the Bristol Junior Combination plate and came away with a hard-fought victory.

Winscombe opened the scoring when Matt Lloyd took advantage of a lineout on the five-metre line to burrow over in the corner. A second try soon followed from Sam Denham, who finished off an excellent passing movement.

However, Hornets then hit back and spent the rest of the first half pressurising the Winscombe line, converting a penalty when Winscombe were caught offside in front of the posts.

The home side should have gone ahead on half-time when Denham broke clear, only to lose the ball in the goal area.

The second half was more even, although Winscombe scored next when Denham took a quick penalty and sprinted through the Hornets defence for a try which Robbie Mackay converted.

Hornets replied with a penalty but then conceded a penalty try when Dan Bond was tackled high in the act of crossing the line. Mackay added the conversion.

The final try went to Peter Hooper, who was set up by Charlie Pye following a flowing passing movement which Mackay again converted. Winscombe are now in the final against Weston on Sunday, December 20.

Winscombe U11s 35

Clifton U11s 0

Winscombe went on the attack early on when a powerful run from Josh Hunt was picked up by Tristan Greene, who scored the first try, converted by Ashley Dodd.

There was notable good work from Gabe Bell before Clifton mounted their own attack, but the Winscombe defence held firm and stopped them from scoring.

Bell went on to score Winscombe's second try, which was converted by Joe Hartshorne as the hosts maintained their advantage at the break.

The second half saw Winscombe seize every opportunity the visitors gave them. Tristan went over for his second and third tries of the game, converted by Matt Cottington and then Will Macarthur.

After the restart, a great run from Bell was taken up by Matt Cottington and although Clifton defended their line bravely, they had no answer to the continued pressure which led to Tristan scoring his fourth try, converted by Tom Fear.

A second game was then played involving Winscombe's developing players and others playing out of their regular positions.

There were some good individual performances, notably coming from Tom White, Issy West and Alfie Light.

However, several missed tackles meant that Clifton were able to run in four tries (two converted) – one coming from Winscombe's own Thomas Amer, on loan to the visitors.
