Crewkerne robbery victim knocked unconscious in attack of 'mindless violence'

A violent robbery in Crewkerne which left a man unconscious has been condemned by town councillors who are backing a police appeal for information.

The robbery took place at 1.30am on Friday. Police say the victim was walking home and as he crossed a raised grass area at the junction of Tower Hill Road and Barn Street he was hit on the back of the head.

The man’s wallet was found later by a member of the public and returned to him but cash was missing.

Deputy mayor Sylvia Allman said: “This mindless violence is unacceptable and we would back the appeal of the police for anyone with information to come forward. No one likes to hear about things like this happening in Crewkerne, people have the right to walk around without fear of something like this happening.”

Councillor Neil Sturtivant called for a crack down.

“It is impossible to have a policeman on every corner so we need to look at why people do these things, why they are so desperate for money?” he said.

A police spokesman said: “An investigation has begun and we would particularly like to speak to the member of the public who returned the wallet to the victim as they may have important information which could help us. Anyone who witnessed the robbery or knows who may be responsible should contact us on 101.”

Meanwhile, police are continuing to investigate a robbery which took place on Sunday, December 23, in Ilminster.

Staff and customers were subjected to a terrifying ordeal at McColl’s on East Street when a masked raider burst through the doors with a knife and demanded money from the till. Police say the man came into the shop and threatened staff and made off with a quantity of cash. They have repeated a request for information from the public on the incident but said they were not aware of any link with the robbery in Crewkerne.

The shop’s manager Jane Davies said this week: “We’ve made changes to the hours of staff so nobody will be working alone that early in the morning again. What happened was awful but we have to get on with things. I have asked the company to look into further security measures such as a protective door at the counter.

“Safety is paramount and we want to prevent anything like this happening again in future.”
