Cream of the crop coming to Shepton
CATTLE from across the country will compete at Bath and West Showground next month in the annual Dairy Show.
Dairy cattle are at the heart of the show with 300 entries covering the six main breeds, plus classes for calves and Junior Showmanship classes to encourage the exhibitors of the future.
At the end of the day each breed champion will be judged by a panel of five experts who mark the entrants out of ten, with all competitors hoping for the elusive 50 out of 50.
Show organiser Alan Lyons said: “The Dairy Show is one of the largest specialist dairy events in the country, and everyone wants to come and exhibit their best cows and see how they measure up to their compatriots both within and between the breeds.”
Iwan Morgan from Carmarthen will be judging the Holstein section for the first time this year, having judged across the UK, Europe and Australasia over the past 20 years. He said: “Everyone thinks they’ve got great cows at home, but the Dairy Show attracts more top cows than most, and it’s the best way to see how you compare.”
Mr Morgan said he will be looking for a well-balanced, milky cow with good conformation and capacity to take home his breed championship: “I’m looking for a cow that everyone can appreciate.
“If you can judge one breed, you can judge all breeds; essentially you’re looking for the same traits.
“I’m really looking forward to getting in amongst some fantastic cows in the ring, and meeting so many knowledgeable people.”
The Dairy Show provides the opportunity for milk buyers, dairy farmers and farm managers to meet.
It showcases an extensive display of agricultural machinery and equipment and is hailed an excellent and profitable networking opportunity.
Micron Bio-Systems has been announced as the main sponsor for this year’s Dairy Show.
A spokesperson said: "The Dairy Show is a key fixture for many dairy farmers throughout the south west and further afield.
“It is widely recognised as a one-stop-shop for all things dairy, from world-class cattle showing to over 300 trade stands.
"Micron Bio-Systems is delighted to be involved in this exciting year of change, supporting the team's endeavours to increase the number of trade stands, educational seminars and showing classes."
Entries for the show, which will be held on October 2, close on September 16.
