Craig Laird is refusing to become carried away after his Weston-super-Mare team achieved back-to-back wins for the first time this season.

Following a poor start to the Blue Square South campaign, the Seagulls followed up last Saturday’s 2-0 FA Cup success at Frome with an impressive 3-0 league victory at Havant & Waterlooville.

They can make it three wins in a row when they host Eastbourne Borough tomorrow, but manager Laird is keeping his feet firmly on the ground.

He said: “I was not panicking and worrying about things when we took just one point from our first four games and I’m not going to go overboard now that we’ve won a couple on the bounce.

“It is a long old season and there will be no knee-jerk reactions at this club.

“Of course, I’m pleased because we are improving and growing in confidence. But you can go from bottom to top of this league and back again in a few weeks, so I’m taking nothing for granted.

“People were saying that we were in trouble a week or so ago and now we are just four points off the play-offs.”

Weston’s new signings are bedding in and Laird is now seeking greater consistency in performance and results.

He said: “Confidence is the key to it all and the lads have had to be brave both physically and mentally.

“It is difficult when results go against you and people become critical. These lads have shown a lot of character.

“We have decided to go with these players this season and it is important we keep faith with them, especially when things are not going so well.”

Influential central defender Matt Villis is struggling with injury and unlikely to make the squad to face Eastbourne at the Woodspring Stadium.
