“She asked him to shut the gates, however without warning he raised his right hand and slapped her across the left side of her face,” she said.
“This caused her to step backwards and she bit the inside of her cheek causing a cut.”
Mrs Chetland said the complainant and defendant were neighbours and when the matter was reported to the police Redding was arrested.
During interview he admitted the offence saying he had slapped her because she had been rude to him.
He said he had lost his temper and the situation had been building up for two years.
Redding told the magistrates that things at the flats where he lived had been getting out of control due to abuse he had suffered from other tenants.
“I spoke to the staff to ask them to stop them harassing me but they didn’t do anything about it,” he said.
“I slapped Val because of the way she spoke to me so I just snapped and slapped her.”
The magistrates fined Redding £100 and ordered him to pay a £15 victim surcharge and £25 towards costs.
