SOMERSET cricketer Jos Buttler has been awarded an England incremental contract for 2012-13.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Buttler, 22, has been given the award by the England and Wales Cricket Board in recognition of his contributions to his country in the shorter format of the game.

Buttler came up through the youth ranks at Somerset, starring for the U13, U15 and U17 teams before making his First Class debut in September 2009.

The former King's College, Taunton, pupil has qualified for the award after playing in nine Twenty20s and one 50-over international during the contract year.

National selector Geoff Miller said: "This award reflects the contribution Jos has made this year in the shorter formats of the game for England and we congratulate him on his achievement."

Buttler was one of just three England batsmen to reach double figures in their record-breaking defeat to India in the Twenty20 World Cup on Sunday. He made 11 from his country's final total of 80 not out - their lowest ever in that format - chasing India's 170-4. England play their Super Sixes game today.

Somerset team-mate Nick Compton has set his sights on opening the batting for England after being selected in the Test squad to tour India.

"I am eyeing up that opening position," he said. "I've opened the batting my whole life, it's only at Somerset where I've batted at three."
