A Wells county council candidate claims to have been assaulted by a member of the public while out canvassing for the county council elections on June 4.

The candidate, who said they do not wish to comment publicly on the incident, was kicked in the back after a doorstep altercation on Sunday evening.

The kick came after a verbal disagreement on the doorstep.

It is believed a householder, who was known to the candidate, took exception having an election leaflet pushed through his letter box.

The candidate said he has reported the matter to the police.
