Sedgemoor District Council has denied rumours that the historic St Matthew’s Field in Bridgwater is up for sale to developers.

The 400-year-old site is the home to the even older Bridgwater Fair, which got under way yesterday.

The council’s corporate director, Allison Griffin, confirmed that despite a number of planning applications in and around the field and rumours that it may be sold for development, there is no risk of loss and the annual fair is not at risk.
