With 11 uniquely decorated rooms, the hotel opened in the 1930s and is believed to have been a regular celebrity hang out for stars such as Rolling Stone Mick Jagger, who is said to have been seen there often.

Auctioneer Quintyn Howard-Evans said he expected the auction to create a lot of interest.

He said: “The original plan was to hold the auction in the hotel in London, but we soon realised it was way too small.

“I decided to hire the Crown Hotel for a couple of weeks and brought all the furniture down from London to hold the auction.

“I am expecting it to cause quite a stir as there is some lovely items on sale, including Edwardian and Victorian furniture, interesting lamps and stunning oil paintings.

“I was told the hotel was popular haunt with celebrities, most notably Mick Jagger.”

As well as furniture there will be cookers, fridges, curtains, mirrors, office equipment and even topiary bushes for sale.

The average cost to stay for one night was in the region of £150 per person.

Its neighbours included exclusive designer shops, Jimmy Choo, Gucci and Prada.

Viewing is tomorrow from 10am to 4pm and on the morning of the sale from 8.30am.

The clearance sale begins at 10am.
