Somerset batsman Nick Compton feels close to regaining full fitness after a confidence-boosting innings against the county for Yorkshire in a second XI match.

The England Lions man made 39 before retiring out, although that was not enough to avert an innings defeat for the White Rose county in the three-day friendly at Taunton Vale.

Compton, who this summer narrowly failed to amass 1,000 runs before the end of May, said: “I will definitely put myself forward for next week’s (first-team) game against Worcestershire.

“I want to help Somerset end the season well and finish the summer strongly myself.”

Yorkshire were bowled out for 153 and 124, with Somerset making 448 in between.

Compton added: “I retired on 39 because I didn’t want to push it too far.

“I felt in good nick and thought I played pretty much like I have played all year.

“My back felt good, but I just wanted to take it one step at a time and batting against Somerset’s bowlers was good fun.

“There was a bit of banter from the boys, but I took it very seriously and I’m glad that I felt in good touch.”

Compton expressed his appreciation to both coaches for allowing him to take part in the game.

“I am very grateful to both team coaches – Paul Farbrace of Yorkshire and Jason Kerr of Somerset – and it was good to be able to help theYorkshirebatsmen a little bit and pass on a bit of knowledge here and there because they had quite a young side.

“To end up playing against Somerset’s bowlers added a little bit more competition to the situation.”
