No doubt many of you will have immediately looked at our front page picture and subsequent story about the Frome 'ghost' sighting and thought 'that is ridiculous - it must be a con'.

To be honest being a cynical old hack, that was probably my first impression as well but the actual strength of comments made by people who saw the image and cannot work out what it can possibly be has definitely made me look twice.

The thing about ghosts and (dare I say it) their out-of-space equivalent, aliens, is that a lot of people will not believe that any such thing exists no matter what evidence is put before them. I have to say I'm probably one of those 'non believers' in this regard myself but I do think it pays to be open-minded. As such I'm sure that this image will create a lot of debate among the regulars at the Packhorse pub and indeed those people such as the town's resident ghost hunter Nick Thurston who is already convinced this could be something quite exciting in that weird paranormal world.

What has added to the speculation amongst pubgoers is other unexplained events that have happened in the building and I've no doubt that over the next few days and weeks people will be keeping a very close eye on proceedings as they sup their pints at the Packhorse.

Of course (and I'm sure there are a lot of you still thinking this) there could be a perfectly rational explanation and we would be delighted to hear it if you have one.

And if you know of any other ghostly goings-on in and around Frome then do let us know. You may think 'who am I gonna call - Ghostbusters?' but don't forget to call us as well afterwards!

I'm not here to argue if ghosts exist or not but i'm going to come completely outright and say that THIS PHOTO IS A HOAX. It was created with an iPhone application called Ghost Capture which allows you to insert one of several stock "ghost" images into a photo of your choice. One of the stock ghost images is the one that is in the image sent into the standard.

Unfortunately for larraine and her friends, she has been fooled by the photographer.”

“anyone who has visited the American Museum at Claverton will recognise this figure straight away - it the model in there. Maybe he visited there first and then took a picture in frome causing a double exposure. Otherwise it's a long way to travel from the american civil war to haunt a pub in Frome !!”
