Clarrie Dunbar fell agonisingly short of taking the 16 points they needed to top the Wessex League Central Region table despite cruising past Weston St Andrews on Sunday.

Although Clarrie were already guaranteed a place in the knockout stages, a maximum-point victory would have taken them level on points with Bristol at the summit.

Two solid home wins kept them on track and, although Andy Colebrooke’s quartet were comfortable 27-8 winners at Weston, Craig Doughty’s four were held to a draw to leave Clarrie with 15 points from the 91-49 triumph. Russell Francis and Keith Bailey led their home rinks to victory by ten and 13 shots respectively.

Clarrie have been drawn against Poole-based Dolphin in the first knockout round and the match will take place on Sunday, March 10.

In the Somerset Double-Rink Men’s Knockout competition, Clarrie defeated Nailsea 49-29 to reach the semi-finals.

Having won the title last year, Clarrie were in determined mood on Saturday and raced into a 23-shot lead after just ten ends before seeing out the victory.

Clarrie play Taunton (Vivary Park) in the last four on Saturday, with the winners booking a place in the final at Donyatt on March 23.

Clarrie’s ladies were also successful at the weekend, beating Bristol 57-22 in the second round of the North Somerset Presidents Trophy.

They started the double-rink competition strongly, moving into a 27-shot advantage after ten ends and extending it to 35 points by the close.

In the next round, Clarrie will take on Clevedon, who are also the ladies’ opponents on Saturday in the semi-finals of the Somerset Double-Rink competition.
