THE Burnham and Highbridge Civic Award winners have been announced.

Annette Haggett received an award for her two decades of service at Burnham Tourist Information Centre. It is unusual for the town council to grant a Civic Award to a person for outstanding performance within their employment, but Annette's contribution to Burnham TIC has led to this exception.

Hazel Braund is recognised for her years of service to Burnham and Highbridge Choral Society. She was a founder member in 1972 and has since served as secretary, treasurer and more recently as chairman.

Her work on the committee of the League of Friends for Burnham Hospital is also recognised.

Richard Mathews is recognised for his work with the Burnham Area Youth Centre and the Sedgemoor Association of Handicapped Persons.

As BAY chairman in the 1990s, he supervised refurbishment of the building and displayed outstanding leadership as centre expanded.

He has also been credited as almost single-handedly keeping the handicapped association operating.

And Mike Young is recognised for his years of work with carnival clubs and Highbridge and Burnham Carnival Committee.

This is in addition to his former voluntary work with Burnham Lions and, presently, the Rotary Club.

The awards will be formally presented at the annual Civic Service on Sunday, at St John's Church, Highbridge, at 3pm, with a reception to follow at King Alfred School.
