Chris Rundle column: Brian May on back foot over badger cull
The sickening stench of hypocrisy hangs heavy in the air over Dorset this morning, and the miasma is particularly noticeable above the private estate of the badgers’ champion Brian May.
You will be familiar with him as the celeb who has been denouncing the badger cull and the farmers planning to take part in it in equally vituperative terms.

Chris Rundle column
Yet such opprobrium, it seems, only applies to the business of culling badgers. Culling deer is somehow different, which is why he has been allowing deer to be shot on his 140-acre plot – some 23 reportedly young, healthy animals were taken out by a stalker on his instructions.
Once he was confronted with the story there came the sorry spectacle of the ageing rock musician digging himself deeper into the pit with his claim that he had been advised to carry out the cull because it would improve the health of the local deer population.

Precisely the reason why farmers want to cull badgers: the countryside is now grossly-overpopulated to the extent where TB is rampaging through it as never before.
Finally a classic ‘black is actually the new white’ statement on the affair from the RSPCA illustrates what a corner this completely discredited organisation has painted itself into.
“There is strong scientific evidence that deer culling is humane and effective in certain circumstances. The recently postponed cull of badgers does not accord with these circumstances.”
Why it’s “humane” to shoot a deer but not a badger is an argument I am still struggling to get my head round. As to “effective” – you can only judge that, one would have thought, after the event.

“Deer culling for the sake of a healthy deer population is well known.
Culling thousands of badgers is not for the good of a healthy badger population .
Rundle has revealed his malicious intent and twisted logic by writing this article.”

“Thank you Chris. . This man's 'exposure' is long overdue. . He bandies around his doctorate in astrophysics as if it actually meant something when challenging the views of people like veterinary scientist and long experienced veterinary surgeons like Dr Ueli Zellweger MRCVS GST TVL of Somerset. . The harm that badgerists have now wreaked over our countryside over the last 20 years, will enter the history books as the greatest wildlife crime of the last two centuries. . Any first year medical student could understand the madness of playing Russian roulette with probably the most tenacious and evasive bacterial genus that has ever visited this planet.
I blame the Celebrity Culture that now engulfs the young, and pusillanimous politicians of all parties. Top politicians over three decades must all take responsibility for this fiasco.
The more recent development of going back over decades to bring people to book for misdemeanour's they thought were long forgotten, is the one thing that should now bring action. . They all may once have been able to plead ignorance of the subject. . But they can no longer.”

“eyeopener....reservoir. I am my own person, nobody influences my replies.
My last comment was purely to put into perspective the futility of grown people putting so much emphasis on an animal, when so much more in the way of cruelty is happening around the World.
Your last sentence therefore seems very crass.”

“2ladybugs we all read comments we disagree with from time to time, so yes we do have to be diplomatic. I was initially worried that you might have got to close to a certain resevoir of infection!
Children are still dying from TB in the Third World because of mutant TB which is resistant to known antibiotics. Yes, but thats down to entirely different parameters such as overcrowding and poverty. Poverty that keeps them below the bread line and vulnerable to disease, poverty that makes it difficult to afford to complete a course of antibiotics creating resistant strains and when they visit or settle here, they bring the infection with them.
Badgers have been accused of many things, but how many badgers have you seen with suitcases at Heathrow?”

“@eyeopener....it's Friday night, time to lighten up. Children are still starving around the world, sleeping on streets and being abused. Children are still dying from TB in the Third World because of mutant TB which is resistant to known antibiotics. Badgers in this country are still carrying bTB, although I should think in this frosty weather they may well be below ground. I really am losing the will to live with people being so selfish, so please don't expect me to keep being diplomatic when I see stupid comments.”
