It can be a private, intimate moment, shared by just two people.

But when firefighter Alex Mitchard proposed to his girlfriend, there was an audience of dozens.

The couple, who live in Midsomer Norton, went into Bath for a couple of drinks to celebrate Miss Withers' 26th birthday.

They passed the abbey where the choir was assembled and Mr Mitchard suggested they went to investigate. The 29-year-old then knelt on one knee and popped the question.

When Miss Withers accepted, the Mendip Male Voice Choir broke into Hallelujah and Some Enchanted Evening, and a bottle of champagne was unveiled.

She was initially speechless and then said: "I am in shock. I'm absolutely shocked! I really had no idea."

She works for Touchstone, a property management company in Bath, while Mr Mitchard is a firefighter in Bristol.

The couple's parents were also in on the secret and had turned up to watch.

Mr Mitchard's mother Virginia was impressed.

She said: "If someone said he was going to do this a few years ago I wouldn't have believed it. It's so romantic".

Miss Withers' father Colin, a farmer in Clutton, said: "I am delighted, absolutely delighted.

"Alex came to see me a couple of days ago, so we knew the plan. I was pretty sure she would say yes."

Mr Mitchard planned the gesture because his late grandfather was in a male voice choir. He said: "It is a fitting tribute to him."

Choir secretary Les Debenham said: "Alex came to our rehearsal on Monday and heard us sing. The whole thing was a surprise, she was completely in the dark.

"I think he is delighted with the outcome."

It was a new experience for the Timsbury-based choir, and Mr Debenham said: "We have sung at weddings and inside the abbey before, but never for a proposal, and never outside the abbey."

Mr Mitchard said: "I'm blown away. The choir were brilliant."

Asked about the wedding plans yet, he said: "I haven't even thought about it yet."
