Children safe after fire breaks out at Hugh Sexey Middle School

A school in Somerset has closed this afternoon after fire broke out.

Fire crews were called to Hugh Sexey Middle School at Blackford, near Wedmore, at around 10.30am after receiving reports of a roof blaze.

The school has confirmed that all pupils are fine, and has issued a statement requesting parents to pick up their children as soon as possible.

The school currently has no electricity or phone lines, but has released the latest information on its website.

"Can all parents collect their children from the loop as soon as possible, access along the back lanes," it said in the statement.

"Please be patient as it may take some time to collect due to roads closed."

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service initially sent two crews from Cheddar to the school.

Another four crews from Burnham-on-Sea and Wells were requested, and firefighters stripped the school's roof tiles to gain access to the fire and begin extinguishing it.
