Work on a new £300,000 children's centre for Wells will be completed by May, three months late.

The ambitious project, which will house a creche and provide offices for a range of experts on child education and well-being, is being built next to Wells Central School.

The new centre in Wells will provide parents with information on matters such as child development, parenting and advice on how to stay safe and healthy.

The centre would also be a base for drop-in sessions by health visitors, as well as offering pre- and post-natal advice, parenting support classes and opportunities for parents to meet.

The building will serve the whole of the Wells area, working in partnership with other centres in Glastonbury, Street, Shepton Mallet and Chilcompton.

The new centre was due to open this month, but County Councillor John Osman has told a meeting of Wells City Council that the centre will now open on May 6.
