Cheering crowds flock to 'best' show
More than 15,000 people poured into the Shepton Mallet showground on Sunday for what organisers hailed as the best Mid Somerset Show ever.
Glorious summer sunshine coupled with record entries in all classes, record trade stands, record crowds and The Wurzels topping the entertainment bill ensured an all-round huge success story for what is now heralded as Europe's largest free one-day agricultural show.
Longest serving Wurzel Tommy Banner said the band were absolutely thrilled to be performing at the show again.
"We were here three years ago and it tipped down with rain – so it's nice to see the sun and so many today," he said.
"I am sure they are all going to love our rendition of the Shepton Matador in particular."
And he was right. The cheering crowds loved every minute of their 90-minute performance and the band were thronged afterwards by appreciative fans and autograph hunters.
An emotional show president, Roger Eddy, said: "It has been an amazing day – a huge, phenomenal success.
"We have been oversub-scribed in everything – more trade stand applications than we could cope with and we were turning away food stands as we were absolutely full.
"At 1pm the car parks were full – I don't think there can be a spare parking space in the town either. It seems like everyone has decided to come here today to enjoy a wonderful family day out.
"It is just wonderful to see such support.
"To think a couple of days ago this was a bare field and today it is just teeming with people – we estimated by lunchtime we had around 15,000 here and they were still coming in."
Mr Eddy praised his hard-working team and supporters whose efforts had achieved such a wonderful event.
He said: "It takes a lot of hard work to put this show on – but today has been absolutely perfect."
