A city fundraising and charity support group has money to give away.

Wells Action is inviting applications from community groups, charities, sports clubs and youth organisations for grants of up to £1,000 for specific projects.

Ideally, it would like to support as many different groups as possible with a series of small grants.

The group was formed in 2002 by the then mayor David Anderson, bringing together the May Fair Committee and 800th Charter Committee, as well as representatives from other organisations.

Wells Action organises several events, including the May Fair on the Green, summer concerts at the Recreation Ground and the Great Wells Weather Lottery, and also helps out at other charity events, including Wells Carnival and the Reindeer Parade.

It has also organised the 800th anniversary of the King John Charter, the Queen's Golden Jubilee and BBC Music Live, and provided support for the HMS Somerset Freedom celebrations.

All the money raised is put back into the community, either by funding more events or through grants. Bids must be made by September 1.

Mr Anderson said: "Any organisations can apply and, provided they meet the Wells Action criteria, grants are quickly made available.

"The application process is made on very simple forms, without the organisations having to deal with endless paperwork."

The group has recently paid for playgroup equipment and for showers for a village cricket club.

For further information about the work of Wells Action or to apply for a grant, contact chairman Mr Anderson on 01749 672140.

An application form can also be found online at www.wells-action.org.uk.
