Change over 15 years
On Saturday I celebrated my 15th anniversary as editor of the Mid Somerset Series.
This seemed an occasion worth marking with a small glass of Addlestones draught cider and warm words flowed from our staff, particularly those due a pay rise.
My pride in this "long service" was rapidly deflated by Clare Blackmore from Easton, who is researching the history of our papers and told me of a Victorian journalist who served as editor of the Wells Journal for 40 years.
That was long before the Wells paper joined with the Shepton Mallet Journal and Central Somerset Gazette to form the Mid Somerset Series in the 1940s.

Reporting change is our business and we have seen plenty ourselves:
The launch of the Cheddar Valley Gazette in 1954
Pagination of our newspapers increasing from 72 in 1997 to 120 now
The introduction of full colour printing in 1998
Expansion of our What's On coverage from one page to eight
Doubling of our sports coverage
Launch of our thisissomerset, Wells People, Shepton People and Glastonbury People websites
Forecasting the future remains tricky but I know there is a huge demand for trustworthy local information and I am sure Mid Somerset News & Media will continue to provide that service.
The technology may change but the ever rising flood of information which is available on the world wide web can only increase the demand for collated and reliable local information.
