The Amadeus Orchestra is coming to Wells Cathedral for a concert on Wednesday, July 22. In the programme will be John Williams' music to the film Jurassic Park, Bernstein's Symphonic Dances from West Side Story and Rachmaninov's Second Piano Concerto, made famous by the film Brief Encounter.

A fourth piece is not mentioned here but is on the Amadeus Orchestra's website (see competition below).

The orchestra will appear with its principal conductor Philip Mackenzie and pianist Alexander Karpeyev.

Alexander was born deep in Russia, 16 hours by train from Moscow.

He began to play piano at the age of seven, studying at the Children's Music School in Saratov and afterwards at the Musical-Aesthetic Lyceum in Engels.

In 2000, he entered the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory where he studied with the distinguished professors Emmanuel Monaszon, Alexander Mndoyants and Vera Gornostayeva.

He won a scholarship to study with Joan Havill at the Guildhall of Music and Drama, where he currently holds a music fellowship, and has been a major prize winner in many national and international competitions, performing in the most prestigious venues in the UK .

These include the Barbican, Cadogan, Wigmore and Queen Elizabeth Halls in London, and the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester, where he has been asked to return for the third time.

He has also given recitals in Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Switzerland, Japan, Greece and Belgium.

Alexander is a pianist at the highest professional level, a true artist whose unfailing musical charisma has filled concert halls and held audiences captive wherever he has performed.

He has been a major prizewinner in many international competitions including the 1998 Ibla Grand Prize in Ragusa, Italy and the 2001 International Competition for Young Musicians in Enschede, Netherlands.
