Catherine leads England into final
Tomorrow evening the England women's rugby team face New Zealand in the world cup final, led by their West Country captain Catherine Spencer.
The No 8. from Keynsham will lead her side out at The Twickenham Stoop, home of Harlequins, following an electric 15-0 semi-final victory over Australia on Wednesday.
The Black Ferns have been unbeaten in the past three World Cup finals – beating England in the last two, but last time England played them, at Twickenham in November, the home side emerged 10-3 winners. Ms Spencer, 31, who quit her job at Yate Leisure Centre to concentrate on winning the trophy, has admitted second place is "nowhere" to her.
Her Bristol team-mate Sophie Hemming may also feature in the game after coming on as a replacement in the semi.
West Winger Danielle Waterman, from Tiverton, Devon, who scored the second try against Australia, also looks set to start.
Ms Spencer knows her side will have to step up a gear to beat a New Zealand side who have looked formidable throughout their World Cup campaign and breezed past France 45-7 in last Wednesday's other semi-final.
But Ms Spencer is desperate to put the hurt of the past eight years to rest and lift the trophy on Sunday. She said: "We've come into this tournament wanting to win it – second is nowhere for us."
She added: "We're going into the final confident as we beat New Zealand in November and we know we've got the potential to beat them again."
The final takes place at 5.15pm. Coverage of the game is live on Sky Sports 3.
