The Castle Cary and Ansford Carnival Society has given more than £2,000 to a host of local causes.

Funds raised from November's spectacle have been given to 17 local groups.

The beneficiaries range from children's groups and carnival clubs to hospices and the emergency services.

Carnival committee member Sue Stockman said: "These donations, which do so much good, have held up well in these financially challenging times thanks to the generous people of Castle Cary."

The beneficiaries include CaryLive, the Ditcheat Players, Castle Cary Cygnet Majorettes and Avon and Somerset Police.

The carnival's future was uncertain after committee members sweated on raising the £6,000 needed to throw the annual spectacle.

However, this year's procession has been given the green light after Bob Little, Somerset county councillor for Castle Cary, donated £2,500 of his community fund to the cause.
