Cary get into Olympic spirit
Castle Cary Cricket Club are celebrating a special anniversary, with the club's 175th year coinciding with the London 2012 Olympics.
The only time cricket was played at the Olympics was in Paris in 1900, where a Great Britain team, made up largely of players from Castle Cary, beat host nation France to the gold medal.
In recognition of this achievement, Cary will be playing the French national side in July during a special cricket week at the club. There will also be a pre-season tour to London at the end of April.
The club, based in the heart of Castle Cary, has two adult teams that play in the Somerset Cricket League every Saturday during the summer, and junior sides at under-12 and under-14 level.
Along with excellent wickets, the club has superb net and clubhouse facilities. The first team, who finished third in Division 2 last season, are bidding for promotion this year, while the seconds are aiming to improve in Division 7.
Both sides are looking for new players and anyone interested is welcome to attend indoor net training sessions, which get under way on Sunday, March 4 at Caryford Leisure Centre, commencing at 10am for juniors and 11am for seniors. Outdoor nets get under way on April 5.
Anyone interested in joining the club can contact chairman Steve Chaudoir on 01963 440770.
