Wildlife campaigners are to walk through Frome tonight to tell people badger culling has only been postponed and not cancelled.

The Badger Night Walkers will meet at Bridge Street car park at 4.30pm on Thursday afternoon before setting off around the town to hand out leaflets to the public including shoppers.

The group is urging people to ask  agriculture minister and Somerton and Frome MP David Heath why he supports the badger cull.

They claim there is overwhelming science showing it will not work.

The leaflet includes questions to put to the minister.

A spokesman for the group said: "It is vital the public continue to work together and fight to save badgers."

The government announced a delay to the culling of badgers in England in October.

The proposals would have seen trained marksmen killing thousands of badgers in two pilot zones in Somerset and Gloucestershire this autumn.

Surveys found more badgers that expected in the two areas, increasing the cost of the cull and making it more difficult to complete before badgers go underground for the winter.

“Well done, Badger Night walkers. We need to keep reminding government they won't be allowed to get away with a pointless, cruel and counter-productive programme of slaughtering badgers; also that they need to put much more oomph into enforcing the new cattle movement controls and running UK trials of the cattle bTB vaccine that's worked well in other countries.”
