Businesses urged to put heart in awards
A RALLYING cry has gone out to businesses to give their backing to an awards scheme recognising Somerset's community heroes.
Our Heart of Somerset Awards, held in association with Care UK Shepton Mallet NHS Treatment Centre, aim to honour those who have given up their time for others, laid their lives on the line or overcome personal setbacks to raise money for good causes.
But without the backing of other businesses in the area, they could not go ahead. Most recently, Clarks has shown its support by sponsoring the Community Project award.
Company spokesman Paul Spencer said: "Clarks has been a huge part of the community for over 100 years, so we felt we wanted to be part of an event which highlights the work of the people who work quietly behind the scenes to help strengthen our communities and support the people in them. These awards are about recognising people who have given up their time to go above and beyond the call of duty to help bring people closer together and make life better for everyone.
"There are some great examples of grassroots heroes being nominated, and we wish them all the best of luck in the awards."
So far, Avalon Leisure, Mark Robbins and Care UK Shepton Mallet NHS Treatment Centre have all sponsored an award.
Bede MacGowan, editor of Mid Somerset News & Media, said: "These awards are a real opportunity to recognise the unsung heroes who make our communities great – but they need the support of other businesses if they're to continue.
"Times may be hard but this is all about celebrating the best of mid-Somerset, so many thanks to Clarks for stepping up."
Awards still awaiting a sponsor include Local Hero, Volunteer Hero, Environmental Champion, Public Sector Hero, Charity Champion and Outstanding Young Person of the Year (under 18).
The event culminates in an awards ceremony on September 25. To sponsor an award, call us on 01749 832300.
