A Somerset man has admitted making explosives that led to police evacuating a residential area in Burnham-on-Sea last month.

Phillip Leonard, 36, pleaded guilty to four charges of making explosives when he appeared at Taunton Crown Court this morning.

The charges relate to an incident on Friday, January 20, when chemicals were discovered during a police raid on a property in Beatty Way.

Bomb disposal experts were called in after police obtained a search warrant under the Explosives Act, and a safety cordon was put in place with homes in the nearby area evacuated as a precautionary measure.

Leonard has been remanded in custody, and will be sentenced at a later date.
