Attempts at a record-breaking stag do in Somerset were thwarted by not enough burgers and bad weather at the weekend.

For Charlie Badderley’s stag do, his friends Tony Dickinson and Tom Lawler, all from the Lake District, drove to central Somerset to attempt four world records.

The group have made it their mission to travel across the globe in fur-covered vehicles since 2008, and chose Street for the location of much of the stag do.

True to form, they turned up in Street in a fur covered bus, doing its best impression of a stag, complete with antlers.

The group were aiming to smash the world record for the fastest 100m on a space hopper, the most hamburgers eaten in three minutes, the fastest time taken for eight people to wrap a person in newspaper, and the greatest number of eggs crushed with the forehead in 30 seconds.

The challenge started with the space hopper dash on Berrow beach, but high winds and cold weather meant the fastest speed they could manage was 58 seconds – the world record still standing at 30.2 seconds.

Defeated, the team clambered into their specially modified stag van and drove to Street where they attempted to wrap Charlie in newspaper.

The team had a little more success with this task, and think they have broken the current record of one minute and 32 seconds, after managing the feat in one minute and 28 seconds.

“We’ve sent the footage off to Guinness, and hopefully they’ll be able to verify that we’re the new record holders,” said Mr Dickinson.

Attempts to beat the world record at eating hamburgers hit a stumbling block when the group arrived at McDonald’s in Street, only to be told that the restaurant didn’t have enough burgers for the group to try to beat the record.

“They weren’t very helpful, really,” Mr Dickinson said.

“They said that if we needed that many burgers, we should have ordered them a week in advance.

“So we couldn’t beat that record – even though we did eat a lot of burgers.”

With the alcohol flowing, plans to carry out an attempt at breaking eggs against their foreheads soon fell by the wayside.

“It was a great weekend,” said Mr Dickinson.

“And we wanted to make sure we gave our friend a proper send off before he gets married.

“We were all back at work on Monday, and back to reality, after a lot of fun.”

The do was all part of a good cause, and raised funds for Help for Heroes.
