MATCH REPORT: Wells City 1 Longwell Green Sports 1

Depleted Wells City picked up a point in their fight against relegation from the Toolstation Premier Division thanks to a late leveller from Jake Brown.

Missing three outfield players, Wells squandered an early opportunity to take the lead when Joe Morgan headed over an empty net in the fifth minute.

Sam Thomas then wasted a similar opportunity for the visitors but goalscoring chances were otherwise at a premium in the first period.

Wells were denied a penalty late in the half as Brown’s trickery took him past two defenders before he was upended but referee Lawrence waved away the hosts’ claims.

Longwell Green eventually broke the stalemate midway through the second half when debutant Wells goalkeeper Adam Clark spilled an effort from Thomas and the same player followed up to tap the ball into an empty net.

Wells deservedly got themselves back on level terms with just ten minutes remaining, Brown waltzing past two defenders before lifting the ball over the keeper and into the top corner.

Dan Hunt had a late header deflected wide by a defender as Wells pressed for a winner but the points were shared.

Wells travelled to Buckland Athletic last night and visit bottom side Barnstaple Town on Saturday.

MATCH REPORT: Hallen 4 Wells City 2

High-flying Hallen proved too strong for Wells last Wednesday night, although the visitors competed well for long spells.

The early exchanges were fairly even, but it was Wells who made the breakthrough on 18 minutes when a Nick Lawton cross was hammered home by Brown from close range.

Hallen came back strongly at Wells and Tom Collett hit the bar with a tremendous effort before equalising on 26 minutes. His shot from the right of the area flew over the returning Ben Dancey and into the far corner of the net.

The hosts went ahead eight minutes into the second period when Andy Cook’s free-kick was parried at full stretch by Dancey, but the luckless keeper allowed the ball to slip from his grasp and roll into the net.

Tom Manning went close with a free-kick but the home side extended their lead when Ashley Bennett squeezed the ball through a packed penalty and into the corner of the net.

Dancey then suffered a recurrence of the knee injury which has kept him out in recent months and was replaced by manager Ray Johnston.

Dan Hunt’s header gave Wells hope with three minutes to go but their fate was sealed by a fourth Hallen goal in stoppage time.
