Bronze Age burial hopes are dashed
ARCHAEOLOGISTS who were tipped off about an ancient burial ground in Shepton Mallet are reaching the end of their dig.
The work is being carried out by Context One Archaeological Services on behalf of Bloor Holes and B&R Thorner in response to planning conditions placed on a new development.
Somerset archaeologist Peter Leach provisionally examined the area in 2008 and said he thought there may be a Bronze Age round barrow, used for burial.
Works at Gore End Farm have been on-going for more than a month but only a small amount of pottery shards, brick and tile fragments and clay tobacco pipe have been found.
