British Empire Medal presented to Croscombe man
A CROSCOMBE man was presented with a British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to Mendip CAB on Thursday.
Michael Sackett, a volunteer with Mendip Citizens Advice Bureau for 23 years, who has also worked as acting manager of the CAB, received his BEM from Lady Gass, Lord Lieutenant of Somerset.
The presentation ceremony took place at County Hall and was led by David Fothergill, chairman of Somerset County Council.
Mr Sackett said: “It was a moving ceremony, where I was supported by my wife and three children.
“I am of course honoured to receive the award, and to have recognition not just for myself, but also because it allows, in a wider sense, recognition of all the volunteers of the Mendip CAB, who give their time freely to help their fellow citizens; and wider still than that, to the other county's CABs, and voluntary organisations. Where would the country be without them?”
After the presentations there was time to chat over tea and cake, and to enjoy the broad interests represented by fundraisers and volunteers from the worlds of music, cricket, education, the U3A, the Red Cross, and the local community. Four men and four women were honoured at the ceremony.
