Workshops will give the performers a chance to meet and gain knowledge from respected musicians who will be giving the sessions.
A panel of judges will then select a shortlist of four acts to become the nominees for the 2014 Award.
If Darren is successful he will have the opportunity to perform live in session for Radio 2’s Folk Show as well as top UK festivals, including the prestigious Cambridge Folk Festival.
In addition to having the spotlight on him, Darren, who is endorsed by Tanglewood Guitars, has also been working hard in the recording studio producing a CD for general release and creating his own website in order to take sales and bookings.
Darren, formerly of Taunton Academy said: “I’ve been playing the guitar for over five years, and until recently I have been self-taught.
"My course has definitely helped me with my performances as I’ve learnt about working in a band, the music industry, music theory, music history, the need for excellence and not-settling with second best.
"I love performing and the response from the crowd, the exhilaration of being on stage and the immediate feedback from the audience.
"I have gigs at the Fleece and Firkin and the Colston Hall in Bristol planned as well as delivering workshops for Tanglewood Guitars around the country, most recently at the London Acoustic Guitar Show.
"I have also been busy releasing my CD, which was released last weekend."
Luke Allen, programme manager for music said: “Darren is an incredibly talented guitarist and a real star in the making.
"He has a great work ethic and has really applied himself to getting work and getting himself ‘known’ across the county and beyond.
"At the College’s recent ‘Acoustic Gig’ at The Pier Tavern in Burnham-on Sea, Darren played a solo and the audience were just astounded at his skill.
"He is certainly going to go a long way!”
Jenny Ashworth, section leader for Music and Performing Arts said: “Many of our students go on to great things in the music industry but it’s great to see someone as talented as Darren do so well, this early on in his career.
"Everyone that watches him play is astounded by his dexterity and musical talent on the guitar.
"He is certainly a name to remember.”
