Controversial comic Russell Brand has created a storm in a seaside town – by claiming it is full of drug-taking junkies.

The long-haired funnyman, 37, offended locals after he took to Twitter to advertise his forthcoming show in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset.

Writing to his five million followers he proclaimed "let me take you to junky town" before giving fans the date of the Weston performance on September 4.

Officials in the town slammed his comments and urged him to walk around when he comes to the Playhouse Theatre to perform his one-man stand-up show.

David Hitchins, Weston's mayor, said: "It is disappointing because I don't think he has given the town a fair chance or the people who are working here for the good of the town.

"It's annoying he has chosen to say this about the town when he clearly hasn't been here for a while and there are a lot of people here working hard for the benefit of Weston.

"When he comes I think he should have a good look around the town and see the real Weston."

Weston-super-Mare had previously been known for its large number of recovering drug addicts.

The number of drug rehab spaces in Weston has nearly halved in the past six years – a figure that was hailed as "really impressive progress" by the town's MP John Penrose.
