Clarrie Dunbar's Russell Francis saw off club-mate John Freeman at the weekend to reach the national finals of the EIBA national men's singles competition.

The area final was closer than the 21-7 scoreline suggests but Francis managed to get the better of his opponent to book his place at the finals in Nottingham on March 30.

Keith Bailey, who captained the Clarrie team and also plays for Somerset in the liberty Trophy, said: "It wasn't all about winning, it was also a pleasure to play against a team that represented the future of the game."

In Division 1 of the Somerset League, Clarrie claimed a 14-2 points victory over Street-based Victoria on Sunday.

Victoria were one shot ahead after five ends and had extended their lead to 14 shots after ten ends. However, Clarrie fought back to take a six-shot lead after 18 ends and eventually won 90-76 overall.

On Saturday, defending champions Clarrie take on Nailsea in the third round of the Somerset Double-rink competition, while the women take on Bristol in the North Somerset Presidents Trophy, also a double-rink event.

The following day, Clarrie take on Weston St Andrews in their final Wessex League group match, having already booked their place in the play-offs but needing the maximum 16 points to finish top of the Central Region table.
