AN EXHIBITION about a historic boat from Somerset's seafaring past runs until June 27 at Blake Museum in Bridgwater.

The event celebrates the Irene, the last vessel to be built at FJ Carver and Son shipyard in Bridgwater, launched on May 29, 1907.

A fire devastated her in 2003 but owner Leslie Morrish, 74, would not give up on her and began a costly restoration, which is almost complete.

But the vessel needs iron ballast to continue the project.

The event includes the history of the vessel, material from Saint Mary's and Spaxton schools, who used her as inspiration for coursework and a section on the post-fire rebuild.

Bridgwater mayor Bill Monteith opened the exhibition on Tuesday, May 25.

It is open Tuesdays to Saturdays from 10am to 4pm.
