Bid to make Olympic gold winner a freeman of city
A campaign has been launched to award the Freedom of the City of Wells to Somerset's greatest female Olympian, Mary Rand.
Former athlete Tony Williams of Wells launched the campaign.
He said: "I feel the council let her down in 1964. We will never get another Mary Rand in the Wells area.
"It's never too late to put right a wrong done so long ago."
In 1964 the city council organised a civic reception and welcome home ceremony but failed to recognise Mary Rand's achievements in Tokyo by making her a Freeman.
Mary Rand said that she would be "Absolutely delighted that what I did so long ago would be honoured in this way.
"I would be absolutely thrilled to bits."
