Better watch these psych rock veterans like Hawks
The short-lived 1970s progressive rock band Hawklords are back in action and about to headline The Greasy Truckers Cornish Ball at The Ritz in Penzance next weekend. Originally formed by Robert Calvert and Dave Brock (of Hawkwind) from the ashes of The Sonic Assassins in 1978, Hawklords now features key former Hawkwind band members Harvey Bainbridge (on synths and vocals), Jerry Richards (guitar and vocals), Adrian Shaw (bass and vocals) and Ron Tree (lead vocalist and effects).
Drummer Dave Pearce, sticks-man from UK psyche-rock band The Bevis Frond, completes the line-up.
Their live show features classic "Hawk" songs alongside material from the brand new CD release Dream, plus songs from last year's critically acclaimed LP We Are One.
The audience can also expect a stunning digitally projected lightshow created by lighting designer, Dave "Lighthouse" Johnson, and some circus capers too.
Hawklords play The Ritz, Penzance on Friday, October 25, with support from Hanterhir.
Jacqui heads up eclectic riverside festival bill
Calstock's second jazz and blues festival bursts into life next weekend, promising a diverse mix of music and workshops for all tastes and ages at venues throughout this picturesque Tamar-side village. The headline show by Jacqui Dankworth (pictured above) at Calstock Arts – showcasing her new album – has already sold out, but there are many more shows to choose from. Among these is the opening performance on Friday, October 25 by virtuoso trumpeter Matthew Halsall, one of the rising stars of the UK jazz scene. His latest album Fletcher Moss Park has won universal praise, with a style influenced by John and Alice Coltrane as well as the glories of the 1960s British jazz scene. Saxophone fans have the chance to enjoy the legendary Jean Toussaint with a preview of his new project Saxophone Giants, prior to headlining the London Jazz Festival. Plus there's an opportunity to enjoy a workshop led by Jean himself.
Other local and national names include Louise Parker, The Organisation, Freshly Squeezed, Callington Community Jazz Band and Boys Choir, Julian Piper and Jazzacadabra.
