Bee talk's sweet sting in tail
Ashcott and Pedwell WI
The first meeting of the new year was opened by Celia, our new joint president, who wished everyone a happy new year and welcomed five new members to our group.
Birthday buttonholes were given to Ruth, Janet L, Nina and Joan S. Names were taken for our new year's meal, to be held at the Ring O' Bells, in Ashcott, and also for the St Margaret's Hospice Fashion Show and a trip to Strode Theatre to see 42nd Street.
I announced we had been knocked out of the County Skittle Cup by Walton on the previous evening but was not too disappointed as we did win the Polden Hills group cup this season. Two trophies were then presented, first for the highest average score, which went to Jean Bagg, and secondly the trophy for the highest score in a match, which was a tie between Jean Bagg and Shirley Keirle.
With the business meeting over, Celia introduced Bob Hooper, a local beekeeper. He held our interest with his talk explaining how the bees create the honeycomb from wax before producing honey, how they collect the nectar and pollinate our plants, and much more information. He has been keeping bees for 35 years and has a great deal of knowledge. He was thanked by Carolyn, and several members bought a jar of honey.
After refreshments, the competition winners were announced. The competition for a favourite brooch was won by Shirley, Sue and Nina. Our competitions are voted for by placing coins beside each entry. This money then goes to the charity, Associated Country Women of the World.
Our next meeting will be on Thursday, February 16, at Ashcott Village Hall, at 7.30pm, and the speaker will be John Halls from Miles Tea. The competition will be for royal memorabilia. Visitors and new members are very welcome.
Jean Bagg
